Information for High School Seniors

High School Seniors

Last year, you were too young to vote.
Now, what's your excuse?

Q:  Can I vote?
A:  If you are 18 years old, or will be 18 by the time of the November general election, and a resident of Kentucky for at least 28 days prior to an election, you are eligible to register to vote.

Q:  Where do I register?
A:  The most convenient locations for voter registration are your high school, your county clerk’s office, driver license office when obtaining license, armed services recruitment office, or you can download the registration form here.  The registration form must be mailed or delivered to your county clerk’s office at least 28 days before a primary or general election.

Q:  Will I have to choose a political party when I register?
A. You must be registered as a Republican or Democrat to be eligible to vote in partisan primary elections.  All registered voters may vote in nonpartisan primaries and in November general elections.

Q:  What will my ballot look like?
A:  A sample of your county’s ballot may be viewed here.  Also, counties are required to publish a sample ballot in the local newspaper at least three (3) days prior to the election.

Q:  How will I know where to vote?
A:  You will receive a notice in the mail informing you of your voting location.  The notice will also provide the name and address of your precinct.  You may also log on to the Voter Information Center (VIC) for precinct information.  Voting hours are from 6:00AM to 6:00PM local time, and any voter that is in line to vote at 6:00PM will be allowed to vote.

Q:  How will I know how to work the voting machine?
A:  Large posters and diagrams are posted which provide instructions to voters on the operations of the voting machine.  Also, a voter may request help from the precinct election officers.

Q:  What do I need to take with me when I go vote?
A:  All voters must produce identification or be known by a precinct officer prior to voting.  The types of ID that can be used are: personal acquaintance of precinct officer, driver’s license, social security card, credit card, or another form of ID containing both picture and signature.

Q:  If I am away from home on primary or general election day, how do I vote?
A:  You will need to contact the county clerk in your county via phone, fax, mail or in person to make application for an absentee ballot.  The deadline for applying for a mailed absentee ballot is seven days before an election.
